Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani was “fomenting hate,” after Mamdani called him a “war criminal” and “architect of a horrific genocide” in Gaza.
“He’s trying to turn one group against the other,” Netanyahu said in an appearance on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures.”
Mamdani said last week that Netanyahu “is not welcome in New York City, nor is any other war criminal at large,” repeating arguments from his mayoral campaign, during which he pledged to enforce an International Criminal Court arrest warrant for the Israeli leader.
On Sunday, Netanyahu said he intends to make the trip to New York to “fight for the truth of the Jewish people” at the U.N. General Assembly in September.
The United States is not a party to the ICC, and leaders traveling to the U.N. customarily receive broad protections.
On the sidelines of last year’s U.N. summit, Netanyahu met with Mamdani’s immediate predecessor, a self-described “brother” of Israel, Eric Adams, who said he was “particularly proud” to meet with Netanyahu to “thank him for defending the Western world and our way of life.”
In a roughly two-minute video last week, Mamdani reaffirmed that he agrees with the ICC — “that Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested and tried for his crimes” — but said his office does not have the authority to execute the 2024 warrant.
The Israeli leader is traveling to Washington on Monday to meet with President Donald Trump and attend the funeral of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina).
